Ottawa House hotel register, 1869-1883.

Cloth register with leather spine, manufactured by Maynard, Gough & Co. At head of each page is printed: "Ottawa House, Cushing's Island, Portland Harbor, Me. ... Samuel B. Harmon, Manager." Hotel register for June 30-Sept. 4, 1883. Many of the guests listed are from Canada, including Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec, as well as guests from various newspapers. There are also visitors from Portland, Me., Chicago, Boston, Mass., Detroit, New York, and other locations. Includes general advertisements as well as a loose 4 p. ms. list of "Total Cash Dispersements 1869" which may or may not be related to the Ottawa House, but probably Lemuel Cushing and Cushing Island, as there are many references to "L. Cushing." Includes items such as food, sundries, carpenter wages, bank deposits, salt cod, piano tuning, charcoal, and oil.

The Ottawa House catered to English Canadian tourists. Lemuel Cushing was a businessman and pioneer in the Ottawa valley. In 1859 he bought Cushing Island in Portland Harbor, Me. He planned to turn this island into a summer resort and built the Ottawa House hotel there. Lemuel's son, Francis Cushing, formed Cushing's Island Company in 1883 and hired Frederick Law Olmsted and Charles Eliot to design a summer resort.
